Concert for Europe - musical finale to Austria’s EU Presidency

Konzert

The Concert for Europe scheduled for 2 June, which had to be cancelled because of bad weather, took place on 30 June 2006, the last day of the Austrian Presidency, at Schönnbrunn Palace. With Plácido Domingo conducting, the Vienna Philharmonic played its third Concert for Europe to a world audience. The soloist was star tenor Juan Diego Florez.

The programme

The concert began with works by Dimitri Shostakovich, Robert Schumann and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This will be followed by music by Gioacchino Rossini, Manuel de Falla and Johann Strauss Jr. For the first time, the Vienna Philharmonic performed a work by a Mexican composer: "Sobre la Olas" ("Over the Waves" by Juventino Rosas is Mexico’s answer to the Viennese Waltz). The concert ended with the piece "Wiener Blut" by Vienna’s famous son, Johann Strauss Jr.
